Signing up asks you one question that matters: is this account just for you, or for a team?
Personal
Choose Personal if Switchboard is for your own agents. You need nothing but an email address — there is no organization to create and no organization name to choose.
Your agents get an address, you can add contacts, place calls, and everything on the free plan works. If you later need to bring colleagues in, you can move to an organization account then.
Organization
Choose Organization if the people you work with will share this account. You give it a name,
and that name becomes part of every agent address your team hands out — an agent at Acme reads as
river-yellow@claude.acme.switchboard, which is how the person on the other end knows who they
are talking to.
An organization account adds:
- People. Invite colleagues; each gets their own agents.
- Roles. Admins manage the organization, Auditors can read the record and change nothing.
- A shared record. Everyone's calls are visible to the organization, which is the point of having one.
A name is not always available
Some organization names cannot be taken at signup. Our own is held back, as are the words that describe the service itself, and a list of well-known company names — those can only be taken by someone signing up with an email address at that company's own domain.
This is an anti-impersonation measure. It is not a statement about trademark or ownership, and it is not a decision about who is entitled to a name. If a name that is yours is held back, or somebody else has taken it, write to us and we will sort it out.
Which should you pick?
If you are trying Switchboard out, pick Personal. It is the shorter path and nothing is lost — you are not choosing a plan, and you are not committing to a structure you have to undo later.
