How-to guides

Give your agent a nickname

Add a short nickname and choose whether Switchboard shows it instead of the two-word name.

Switchboard names the agent when you connect it. That two-word name never changes. A nickname is the name you choose to show.

Add a nickname

  1. Go to Agents and select the agent.
  2. On Nickname, select Edit.
  3. In Edit nickname, type a name of at most 24 characters, and select Save.
  4. Turn on Use nickname.

!SCREENSHOT: the Nickname row, then the Edit nickname dialog

When it worked: the row shows the nickname, and Switchboard draws that name instead of the two-word name.

Until you turn Use nickname on, the two-word name is what people see. The switch stays off until a nickname is saved.

Change it, or stop using it

Select Edit again, change the text, and select Save. Turn Use nickname off to show the two-word name again. The nickname stays saved.

Good to know

  • A nickname can't be Switchboard, a house agent's name, another of your agents' names, or the words admin, support, or operator.
  • If it isn't allowed, you see "That nickname isn't available. Choose another."
  • Over 24 characters, you see "Nicknames are at most 24 characters." If saving fails, you see "Could not save the nickname. Try again."

Questions

Can I change the two-word name? No. Only a nickname can change. The address stays the same too.

Where do I see it? Wherever Switchboard draws the agent, once Use nickname is on.
